Custom Vintage Inspired Bridal Fashion: An Interview with EmpressBride

This weeks interview features Countessa from Empress Bride. Countessa is located in Orlando, Florida.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my artistry; however I feel extremely fulfilled to be able to share my vision and am humbled to have others enjoy my work. I enjoy taking time to stop every so often to notice small details that make everyday different and love to laugh.

What special things do you create for weddings?
I have created everything from custom wedding gowns to bespoke designs for wide array of bridal accessories. My shop focuses on custom design bridal shrugs and boleros, wedding dress sashes, veils, hair pieces and fascinators.

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
I began working in the wedding industry quite by accident actually. It happened that many of my past clients came to me as they were engaged to inquire if I would custom design their wedding attire. I was quite flattered to say the least! The deal was sealed when a dear friend of mine asked that I create her wedding gown and the rest, as the say, was history.

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
I feel my design aesthetic and vision are obviously what sets my work apart. I am also a professional custom clothier with twelve years experience and create all of my designs from sketch to finish. I am a fashion designer first and foremost however I choose to create each custom piece myself, so as to have complete control over my artistry from start to finish and maintain true couture standards in my work.

What trends do you see happening in your specialty at the moment?
Vintage glamour, ceremonies or receptions held at unique venues and Eco-friendly planning are all great wedding trends at the moment. The only lasting trend for weddings no matter the year is to make them your own. Finding an individualized wedding theme and style that you love is what is most important when planning your special day. This is after all, a unique celebration to you and your husband-to-be, so do what you both feel most comfortable and happy with. Perhaps your originality will inspire next year’s bridal trends!

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
Simply to enjoy the process and look forward to spending a happy day with loved ones, this is such an amazing time in one’s life you should truly savor every moment.

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
Paris, France.

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
Marie Antoinette.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
I don’t have a particular item, however I would love if each bride could have something completely custom made for her, a really unique item that is special and cherished. I wish every woman, not only brides could have that special something that makes the wearer feel truly beautiful. This is certainly the type of work I strive to create for each one of my clients.

Bridal, Cocktail, Special Events: An Interview with angeew

This weeks interview features Angee & Vincci from angeew, they are located in Hong Kong & Toronto.

Tell us a little about yourself.
ANGEE W. is a handmade clutch bag and accessories business founded in 2009 by a mother-daughter team, Angee & Vincci.

Angee has more than 30 years textile and fashion manufacturing experience under her sash and few of the brands she has worked for include Abercrombie and Fitch, GAP, and Ralph Lauren. She is not only the “Mother” at ANGEE W., but she is also the Master of Craftsmanship. Angee lives in Toronto.

Vincci holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, Canada and is responsible for designing, marketing and communication at ANGEE W. Having lived on three continents —Africa, Asia, and North America — Vincci draws inspiration from her multi-cultural upbringing creating with both traditional and exotic materials. Vincci calls Hong Kong her home city.

What special things do you create for weddings?
We make handmade clutch bags and our designs are inspired by millinery materials – veils, feathers, horsehair, rhinestones, crystals…

Who or what sparked your interest in making wedding-related items?
Angee made our best selling clutch bag for Vincci to attend a wedding as a bridesmaid back in 2008.

What is a little known fact, or something unique about your work that is interesting?
We are a mother and daughter team, working together in two cities 12 hours apart.

If you are married, what’s the one thing you wish you had for your wedding that you didn’t?
We are a mother and daughter team, working together in two cities 12 hours apart.

What is your favorite wedding song?
Aux Champs Elysee by Joe Dassin

What trends do you see happening in your specialty at the moment?
clutch bags becoming a eco friendly option to small bridesmaids’ bouquets.  Plus, these clutch bags can be kept as a wonderful memento of the bride’s big day.  Trends… we are using lots of rhinestones and fascinators are being such a big thing after the Royal wedding.

What is your favorite part of the wedding journey?
Meeting friendly venders.  Getting support from my best friends in the arrangements and in moments of frustrations.

What advice can you share for all the brides getting married this year?
My top tip: Spend where you should spend.  There’s no denial that money can get you a “”better”” wedding.  But having organized events professional for the past 10 years, more expensive doesn’t necessarily means better.  When you are planning your wedding, it’s likely that you have a budget.  So, it’s important to prioritize what is more important to you. It is so important. Simply list out the expenses and rate them.  It will be clear to you where you should spend and where you should simply go without.

My second tip (this one is rather personal): hire the best photographer you can find and pay. With practically every other person owning a DSLR, it is tempting to just ask that friend with a big camera to shoot your wedding day photo. By doing so, you are really not doing yourself a favour… First, you are putting loads of pressure on that friend (just imagine, it’s a wedding! There’s no take #2!) and second, what if you don’t like the photo he/she takes? You can’t even tell him/her as he/she is your friend who did it for free!  So, trust me, your wedding photos is an investment that you should put in your top priority.”

What is your perfect honeymoon spot?
Under the water!  I went scuba diving in Fiji for our honeymoon.  Other places that my husband and I considered are Cinque Terre in Italy and Mauritius.  We ended up in Fiji as there was a new direct flight and the money we saved went into booking into a nicer hotel.

If you could pick anyone famous that would purchase your items for their wedding, who would they be?
Interesting questions as I’ve never thought of this one. hm… My top celebrity clients would be Audrey Hepburn.

If you could choose 1 item from your shop that you wish every bride could have, what would it be?
A high quality clutch bag that she can pass on to her daughter — an heirloom piece.

What are some of your favorite shops on Etsy, wedding or otherwise?
TheFigLeaf, VelocityVectors, SevenLayerDesigns, ShySiren, and TheQuiltedHouse.
